Abstract

Background: Caesarean section is a surgical procedure that carries the risk of causing gastrointestinal dysfunction due to the effects of anesthesia and intra-abdominal manipulation. This condition can cause a delay in the recovery of intestinal peristalsis characterized by bloating, inaudible bowel sounds, and the absence of flatus. One of the non-pharmacological nursing interventions that can be done to accelerate the recovery of intestinal peristalsis is chewing gum. Subject: To determine the analysis of nursing care for Mrs. E post-Caesarean section surgery with the application of chewing gum intervention to accelerate the recovery of intestinal peristalsis. Method: Case study design (case report). The subject was one patient Post-Caesarean Section surgery who experienced gastrointestinal motility dysfunction. Data collection was carried out through interviews, observations, physical examinations, and nursing documentation reviews. The intervention given was chewing sugar-free gum for 15–30 minutes three times a day. Results: After nursing care for 2×24 hours, the results were an increase in bowel sounds, reduced abdominal distension, and the patient was able to pass flatus more quickly. The patient also stated that abdominal discomfort was reduced. Conclusion: Chewing gum intervention has been proven effective as an independent nursing intervention to accelerate the recovery of intestinal peristalsis in post-cesarean section patients. This intervention is safe, easy to perform, and can be implemented as part of evidence-based nursing practice.
